What many people dont know is that leaking from the inner part of the toilet is prevented by the layer of wax at the bottom of the commode and not by the waterproof caulking. If the layer of the wax deteriorates, caulking restrains the water from getting out temporarily, and you might not see any leakage until later. However, caulking prevents the water from outside sources such as from the shower or overflow from getting under the toilet and rotting the floors. Furthermore, it looks aesthetically attractive. 5. When brushing, it is far better to use a glass of water for rinsing instead of running the tap. Wash your vegetables and fruits in a bowl, not under a running tap You can thoroughly wash the vegetables and fruits when you put them in a basin filled with water. Running the tap is unnecessary and wasteful. Store water in the refrigerator instead of drinking from the tap Most people tend to drink water by turning on the tap and let the water run. Better to store water in the fridge, a pour out only what you need, when you need it. When using a bath tub, just fill it with water half way you can save huge amount of water when the bath tub is not filled to the brim. Help save water by following these tips. Learn to trim down unnecessary usage so that water can be used to its full extent. The issue on water management generally has a lot to do with how to allocate this most precious resource equitably. Given our continuously expanding global population, this has not been easy to achieve if recent observations are to be made as the basis. There are actually a number of reasons effective water management is turning out as an impossible dream. For starters, conservation efforts all around the world focus on many different areas like the dwindling forest systems, the greenhouse issue, massive poverty, and many others. In all of these efforts, attempting to conserve water through efficient use is hardly given ample attention. Additionally, there appears to be a misplaced sense of priority among the people living all across the planet. A good example of this was a recent study showing that some people were actually willing to spend money so about 200,000 species of birds could be saved from an oil spill disaster at sea but would not be willing to donate to a fund to provide shelter to 2000 birds in need of a home. In another related aspect, some environmental groups tend to give premium to global issues like over-fishing and illegal farming practices without realizing that these problems are heavily connected to efforts at introducing an efficient water conservation program. In this regard, Australian Treasury Secretary Ken Henry observed that in his country alone, the issue about the proper use of water resources has long been discussed. He said that the government has conducted extensive research on this subject with a view to finding a long-lasting solution. Sadly, noted Henry, even as Australians have been made aware of a growing water problem in their midst, many have continued to make incorrect decisions and have relied more on intuition when it comes to saving water. This has made many government-initiated water management projects generally ineffective. Speaking at a forum during the Weereewa festival held along Lake George, Henry said that people until now have yet to fully recognize just how serious the environmental problem is. This observation is now being linked to continuing researches indicating that from a psychological standpoint, man has not been successful in completely understanding the kind of danger that the entire planet is currently facing. If you are really on a budget you can always find second hand tanks on eBay or Gumtree that you install for minimal cost. The savings on water alone will help pay the tank off within only a few years, if that. 2 Learn how to Change a Washer on a Tap If you have leaky or dripping taps, learn how to change a washer yourself and fix them. Leaking taps waste a significant amount of water as they a continually dripping, so as soon as one starts, if you have the know-how, you should replace the washer. Don8217t make excuses like 8220I can8217t afford a plumber8221. Get online, watch some videos on how to change a washer (it8217s really simple even though plumbers will charge a minimum of 80 to do it) and do it Once you8217ve done it you8217ll be surprised at just how easy it is, and you8217ll wonder why you didn8217t learn sooner. 3 Get a Water-Saving Shower Head Showers and Toilets use the most water out of anything inside your home. Install a water-saving shower head to reduce how much water gets washed down your drain each day. If you want to see just how much water you8217re using in the shower, put your bath plug in while you shower or block up the drain one day while in there. You8217ll soon see just how much wastage there is Installing a shower head isn8217t an extremely technical job, if you don8217t have the plumbing skills to do it yourself, call in a handyman or ask a neighbour or a friend for 10 minutes of their time. Calling a qualified plumber in to do the job will include a call-out fee and probably cost you close to 100 for a very quick job. Use a glass of water when brushing your teeth Many people let the water run from the faucet when they are cleaning their teeth. This is a huge waste of water. Instead just dip your brush into a glass of water then use that also to rinse your mouth. Do not wash the vegetables or dishes under running water Instead of washing your daily vegetables or your dishes under a running tap, rinse them in a small basin filled with water. Do not flush cigarette butts or other waste products down the toilet 8211 Throw this garbage in a trash bin flushing them down the toilet will waste up to 11 litres of water each time. Check your toilet for any signs of leakage 8211 Put an artificial food color or any coloring in your toilet water tank. Observe the bowl without flushing after 30 minutes or so, if the color appears in it water, then there is a leakage. Make sure to repair this as soon as possible because a lot of water can be wasted through leaking cisterns. Use your water meter as a gauge if there are any unknown leaks in your pipes Check the reading on the water meter, then wait after 2-3 hours without using water at all. Then check the meter again, if there is any progress in the meter, then there is a leak somewhere in your pipes. Track it down or call in the experts to repair it immediately. Store rainwater 8211 Rainwater is free, you may use a barrel or any catch basin to store it, and you can use it in watering your plants or washing your car. These tips are simple yet undeniably helpful. Big changes in the world start from small ones. Water conservation may be hard however it is essential to our future wellbeing. We must conserve water and use it properly because years from now we will need that water more than ever. Do your part from the future of humanity and ensure you take whatever steps necessary to minimize your consumption and usage. Day by day, little by little, the world8217s water supply is shrinking. Last year saw what used to be the world8217s fourth largest lake 8211 the Aral Sea, dried up for the first time in history. Leaving behind enough salt for all the fish and chips served in Britain for a decade. Although this isn8217t the kind of salt you want to be sprinkling on your next piece of beer battered cod. The Aral Sea, (or the Sea of Islands translated) is located between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. No longer is the name relevant to the now baron eastern basin of the South Aral Sea, which was once a thriving fishing hub. The reason for this can be attributed to the severe mismanagement of resources to irrigate nearby cotton and rice crops. The Soviet led government of the 1950s and 1960s rerouted the Sea8217s two main water sources which led to an explosion of prosperity in the poor region due to large production of cotton but it also immediately led to far reduced levels of water arriving to the sea. This caused a ripple effect (hehe get it), that made the salinity of the lake rise sharply as water levels continued to decrease, destroying the fishing industry that gainfully employed and fed a significant portion of the population. There is also the issue of fertilizers and pesticides entering the clean water supply as dust storms blow contaminated dust and sand from the evaporated parts of the basin into nearby drinking water. Reports have estimated that anywhere from 15 to 75 million tonnnes of contaminated sands are being spread further around the region due to high winds. This creates further issues for the region as water shortages become a political issue. UNESCO has highlighted the region as a notable water conflict zone as tensions rise between Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan as much of the water is still used to support Uzbekistan8217s cotton industry which accounts for 1 billion of exports annually. More than 60 million people live around the Aral Sea basin, all of who now face grave issues when it comes to accessing our most basic human need. The governments are yet to fully adapt any low energy, low cost desalination techniques to improve water quality which means many locals have resorted to plumbing their own solar desalination systems. with rudimentary designs it is possible to desalinate around 1.5 litres of salt water per day. This is hardly enough for a family and requires some plumbing skills that many people in the region do not have. Commercial tapware producers in the region are trying to make home desalination more efficient and effective for locals but it8217s slow progress. The lake has reached a point where it will never be returned to its former glory. There is hope that with the efforts to restore the biodiversity in the region, with many funds trying to increase vegetation cover to stabilize the soil so that the environmental health can be improved. If the human race is to gain anything from this, it is that water management is an extremely important issue and plans should be made for the future to prevent such a disaster occurring in other agricultural hot spots around the globe.
